On January 18, a cross-partisan coalition of net activists helped galvanize a massive outpouring of online opposition to the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). At the center of those efforts were David Segal and Patrick Ruffini, respectively mobilizing the left and right through organizations they help run, Demand Progress and Don't Censor the Net. Now that the dust has settled somewhat, it's time not only to take stock and ask where the movement goes next, but to ponder: Why is this one of those issues where parts of the left and parts of the right have figured out how to work in concert?
